What is Chevrolet Super Cruise?
Across more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the United States and Canada, owners of select Chevy vehicles can now enjoy an entirely hands-free driving experience. Termed Super Cruise, Chevy has begun equipping certain models with this incredible technology. Once a thing of the distant future, self-driving cars are here to stay, and Chevy seeks to create one of the safest and wide-ranging hands-free driving systems.
How does it work?
Super Cruise utilizes a few different pieces of tech to engineer its hands-free driving experience. Adaptive Cruise Control smartly controls the speed of your car, accelerating and braking as necessary to maintain a driver-defined gap with the vehicle in front of them. Real-time positioning cameras, sensors, and LiDAR maps identify where Super Cruise can be used and once engaged, controls your driving experience. The Lane Sensing Camera keeps you straight and perfectly in the middle of your lane. Finally, Super Cruise connects to the cloud to download the data it needs to operate via the Chevrolet Connected Services system, making full use of GPS and enhanced maps.
Once deployed, Super Cruise is continually updated with new features and improvements. Recently, Super Cruise was upgraded to include automatic lane change and trailering support! These updates are entirely wireless, sent out through Chevrolet Connected Services.
Safety first!
Super Cruise seeks to improve your overall driving experience while, most importantly, keeping you safe! Super Cruise has several safety features to ensure that nothing goes wrong on the road. First, the driver can tailor their Super Cruise experience, including setting limitations for teen drivers. Super Cruise also requires drivers to stay alert while it is active, enforced by its Driver Attention System. Super Cruise is also only compatible on well-maintained roads that do not feature cross traffic, and any safety situations are handled by the driver. Finally, if something ever goes wrong, Super Cruise will automatically contact emergency-certified OnStar technicians.
To the Future
In the coming months, Chevy plans to roll Super Cruise out to more and more vehicles. By 2023, Super Cruise is slated to be equipped on 22 different vehicles, from the Chevrolet Silverado to the GMC Hummer EV. Recently, Chevy announced their intention to add Super Cruise in 2023 to the extremely popular Tahoe and Suburban. Chevy especially seems focused on adding Super Cruise to their all-new EV lineup, with the Bolt receiving Super Cruise in 2022.
