A 2023 Corvette E-Ray Hybrid Is Racing In
Rumored for years, the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray looks like it’s almost here. Although it appears a Corvette Grand Sport is no longer in the works, the new Corvette will be a Hybrid version of the C8 Chevrolet Corvette. The exciting new sports car has debuted yet, but here’s what we know so far:
The Basics of the New Corvette
The 2023 Corvette E-Ray will be the eight-generation of the vehicle. It will be a mid-engine model, great for both base and Z51 trim levels. Chevrolet also appears to be working on even more variants for the future. For example, a Z06 might be coming soon as well.
A New Take on a Hybrid
With the storied tradition of the Corvette, expanding it as a hybrid is sure to bring excitement. It appears the E-Ray will feature a pair of front-mounted electric motors, providing low-speed motivation and an extra kick in various performance scenarios. Its layout is expected to have an internal combustion engine aft of the cabin and two electric motors powering the front wheels, meaning it would have all-wheel drive capability.
What is the E-Ray?
Although nothing is official until Chevrolet announces the new vehicle, there is some stuff we know. General Motors has held the trademark for “E-Ray” since 2015, and it was renewed in 2020. This means this vehicle has probably been in the works for a while, which gives a sense that it will be well-developed and thought-out. Also, General Motors has made a big push toward electric vehicles over the past few years, and they plan to push the transition even harder in the near future. Clearly, General Motors hopes to make a big impact with electric sport vehicles as well.
The Corvette E-Ray’s Engine
As a hybrid vehicle, the 2023 Corvette E-Ray is expected to feature the 6.2-liter V-8 engine that can also be found in the regular C8 coupe and convertible. This engine combined with Active Fuel Management will offer great fuel efficiency. It is capable of producing an impressive 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, so the hybrid won’t sacrifice any power or performance the Corvette is traditionally known for.
When to Expect the E-Ray’s Arrival
Again, Chevrolet hasn’t officially announced the new Corvette variant, so we don’t have a specific date. Still, it is expected to hit Chevy dealers in 2023. If auto shows become more common again when the pandemic subsides, it’s likely we’ll get a good glimpse at it then.
