Camaro To Be Replaced By Electric Sedan
General Motors in the midst of a huge company-wide transition toward electric vehicles. In fact, the automaker hopes to go all-electric by 2035. Part of that transition is retiring the Chevrolet Camaro as we know it. In turn, Chevrolet intends to replace it with a four-door electric sedan. While some customers might be disappointed to see the Camaro go, they should be heartened to know that the new electric vehicle will be a “performance” sedan, continuing the history of muscle the Camaro has.
Transitioning to All Electric
With the goal of no longer selling gas- and diesel-powered cars, trucks, or SUVs by 2035, General Motors is transitioning to all electric vehicles by introducing new EVs along the way. The transition will also be helped along by the U.S. government. To address climate change, the Biden administration is allocating billions of dollars to promote electric vehicles across the country. This money will be spent on domestic manufacturing, research into emerging technologies, infrastructure support for EV charging stations, and more. The U.S. auto market has long been shifting towards electric. These new initiatives will make it even easier for manufacturers and customers alike.
Retiring the Camaro
While GM may not entirely get rid of gas powered vehicles for the time being, the Camaro is still on its way out, and it won’t be redesigned for a seventh generation. Because GM is sunsetting the Alpha platform where the Camaro sits, the six-generation model doesn’t have a replacement. Chevrolet has indicated they will keep the two-door Camaro coupe and convertible around until 2024, but then it will be officially retired. What We Know about the Electric Sedan
Most importantly, we know that the Camaro’s replacement will be a “performance” electric sedan. This means Chevrolet is transitioning an iconic muscle from a two-door to a four-door, similar to Dodge’s revival of the Charger when it became the brand’s full-size four-door sedan. The main difference here is that Chevrolet’s four-door performance vehicle will be electric, which has many great benefits for customers.
It is likely that the electric sedan will feature GM’s Ultium battery tech, currently available in the GMC Hummer EV pickup. This model is available with 1,000 horsepower and is compared to a Porsche in its quickness reaching 60 mph. All of this guarantees that going electric won’t mean sacrificing power or performance.
Offering a Great Price and Additional Savings
Addressing another issue customers sometimes have with EVs, Chevrolet has a goal of making their electric vehicles start at an affordable price. Typically, the average cost of an EV can be more than $19,000 more than a gas-powered vehicle. However, the price of batteries has dropped precipitously over the last 10 years. Analysts predict the price of EVs will be cheaper than their gas-powered counterparts within the next five years.
For additional savings, electric vehicles, like Chevrolet’s new electric sedan, are eligible for a nearly $7,500 federal income tax credit if the vehicle was purchased new in or after 2020. Even better, fuel savings from driving electric can reach up to $4,700 over the first seven years of ownership. Maintenance savings can range from $6,000 to $10,000 over the life of the EV.
